South Asia Center for Media in Development (SACMID)
South Asia Center for Media in Development (SACMID) is a Media Development Organization (MDO) fostering media development in Bangladesh as an indispensable part of tackling poverty and enabling Bangladesh attain its development vision.
SACMID is registered as an independent public trust with Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and established in 2016 for promoting a culture of dialogue within the Government, Media & Civil Society.
The media have always been entwined with public attitudes to Bangladesh. The media have a critical role to play in nation building and strengthening the cultural, political, social, economic and environmental fabric. A pluralistic and free media sector has always been needed to ensure that all voices in society are heard.
Media development in Bangladesh shows shortcomings in the process of integrating media into overall development agenda, the process can lead to more effective collaboration and synergy within Citizen Voice, Media and Government Response.
Since Bangladesh is going to be the middle-income country and the space and scope of media sector is ever-widening, therefore it remains as an area of surveillance that whether the media landscape is constituted a diverse and professional landscape for making media as change catalysts.
The most of the mass media are now monopolized or controlled by economic power in Bangladesh. This significantly biases content towards profit generation and reduce diversity of sources and content. Mass media play a growing role in identity formation and cultural processes, but these are shifting towards an unsustainable individualist and consumerist ethos. The ongoing extension of copyright duration and stiffer enforcement in the digital area is impeding communication and use of knowledge, and the public domain is shrinking. Under the pretext of a war on terrorism, civil rights in the digital environment are being severally eroded.
A complex relationship could be observed within government, civil society and media. The challenges of Media development in Bangladesh are: concentration, regulation, communication rights and sustainability. SACMID would like to address these challenges.
