Promoting Gender Literacy in Media

At SACMID, we believe fostering gender literacy in media is crucial for building a more equitable and informed society. We tackle this goal through various projects and initiatives, addressing the issue on several key fronts:

1. Monitoring and Research:

  • Gender Media Monitoring Project: We assess the gender representation in Bangladeshi media houses, analyzing news content and identifying imbalances. Reports are then shared with stakeholders, sparking conversation and informing policy change.
  • Media Literacy Study Report: We conduct in-depth research on media consumption habits and perceptions of gender portrayal, providing valuable insights into audience awareness and potential intervention points.

2. Capacity Building and Training:

  • Training for Media Professionals: We equip journalists, editors, and content creators with skills and knowledge on gender-sensitive reporting, editorial ethics, and inclusive storytelling practices.
  • Media Literacy Workshops: We educate various audiences, including students, community groups, and civil society organizations, on identifying and critically analyzing gender biases in media content.

3. Lobbying and Advocacy:

  • Policy Dialogue and Advocacy: We engage with policymakers, media institutions, and civil society partners to advocate for gender-sensitive media policies and practices, aiming to create a more inclusive media landscape.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: We raise public awareness about gender stereotypes and their harmful impacts through campaigns and dialogues, encouraging critical media consumption and challenging discriminatory portrayals.

4. Collaboration and Partnerships:

  • Strengthening CSO-Media Alliance: We facilitate collaboration between media and civil society organizations, fostering knowledge sharing, best practice exchange, and collective action towards gender equality in media.
  • Partnerships with International Organizations: We collaborate with international partners like UNESCO and UN Women to leverage expertise, resources, and reach in promoting gender literacy initiatives.

5. Content Creation and Dissemination:

  • Developing Gender-sensitive Resources: We create and share resources such as manuals, toolkits, and reports on gender-sensitive media practices, accessible to media professionals, educators, and the wider public.
  • Promoting Gender-positive Narratives: We support the production and dissemination of media content that challenges stereotypes, promotes diverse voices, and celebrates women’s achievements.
