Seminar and Quiz Competition Held in Brahmanbaria to Prevent Rumours

August 22, 2024 ​​South Asia Center for Media in Development (SACMID) and Swanirvhar Brahmanbaria jointly organized Seminar and Quiz Competition among students to prevent rumors in Brahmanbaria funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The competition was held in the auditorium of Sabera Sobhan Government Girls High School, Brahmanbaria under the chairmanship of S M Shaheen, Executive Director and District NGO Coordinator, Swanirvhar Brahmanbaria.

60 contestants from Sabera Sobhan Government Girls High School participated in the competition and prizes were distributed among the winners at the end of the competition.

Md. Badiuzzaman Bhuiyan, head teacher of Sabera Sobhan Government Girls High School, called for mass awareness to prevent rumors on social media and said, ‘It is advisable to be sensitive in the use of language, images and videos in the use of digital and social media. Awareness plays an important role in preventing wrong and misleading information through these means. However, besides awareness, he also expressed the importance of changing the mentality of students.

President of Brahmanbaria Press Club Javed Rahim Bijan said, ‘Students play an important role in the society in creating awareness in preventing wrong and misleading information through social media. That is why multi-stakeholders participation need to be created to prevent rumors in addition to making students aware to avoid wrong and misleading information. Or else the behavior of people in the society will change.

To prevent rumours, Mr. Shaheen said to the students, ‘Just as any information found on the Internet cannot be trusted, it cannot also be shared without verification. People’s awareness and attentiveness are very important to prevent rumours.

Also, former president of Brahmanbaria Press Club Mohammad Arju Ahmed, former general secretary AFM Kawsar Emran, program officer of SACMID Easin Ahmed and Md. Rasheduzzaman Rashed were present in the competition.
