SACMID shared findings of reviewing the rumor situation in social media platforms in Mymensingh

South Asia Center for Media in Development (SACMID) presented research findings of situation analysis in Mymensingh to review the rumor situation in social media platforms funded by embassy of Netherlands at Mymensingh Press club Auditorium on 17 February, 2024.

The workshop was jointly organized by SACMID and Local civil society organization of Mymensingh Trinomool Unnayan Shangstha (TUS). The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh Mahfuzul Alom Masum was chief guest at the workshop. General secretary of Mymensingh Press club Amit Ray was presented as special guest.

The project consultant Professor Dr. Sheikh Shafiul Islam presented the research findings among the stakeholders. The research was conducted in Dhaka, Mymensing and Brahmanbaria.

According to the research about 39 percent social media users in Mymensingh can open their own Facebook account, only 11 percent people can use it. On the other hand, only 32 percent people are able to justify information get through social media.

SACMID’s research was completed through a survey of a total of 400 people in Dhaka, Mymensingh and Brahmanbaria districts. Besides survey, intensive interviews of 30 people and 6 group discussions were taken. SACMID will work in Dhaka, Mymensingh and Brahmanbaria districts till September this year on misinformation and disinformation and how rumors spread, who spreads rumors, what kind of rumors and how to get rid of them.
