CSO-Media Alliance in Jashore District

Background

Being a strategically located region connecting Bangladesh and India, Jashore is one of the most important areas of Bangladesh with some major issues in the border, like human trafficking and drug smuggling, discrimination against women and a few underprivileged communities like dalits, disabled individuals, and transgender people. are notable in that place. Moreover, spread of disinformation and hate speech through social media poses a greater concern as it hampers communal harmony and social equity. In this context, Journalists can play a crucial role to advocate for human rights, promoting access to information through effective reporting. On the other hand, Civil Society Organizations (CSO) can also play an important role to advocate for human rights, Altogether, CSO-Media alliance can be a strong player with effective impacts.

Objective

With the thematic area of Information and inclusion, this project aims to address various socio-economic challenges faced by the marginalized communities in Jashore District. It aims to reduce information barriers and promote inclusive development for marginalized groups, including women, children, Dalits, disabled individuals, and transgender people.

The project also aims to strengthen the partnership between SACMID and Daily Gramer Kagoj, leveraging their common resources, experiences, and expertise to bring positive change to the marginalized communities of Jashore. The collaboration between SACMID and Gramer Kagoj will serve as a model for CSO-Media partnerships in achieving community empowerment through information, dissemination and inclusion.

It is expected that the success of this collaboration will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-16 as committed by the country at global level.

  • Rapid Assessment Report and Training Needs Assessment (TNA) of both the partners

  • Introducing fact-checking: Monitoring and verifying misinformation, fake news and rumours
  • Observing International Days with rallies, seminars, webinars and various events (e.g. International Women’s Day, Press Freedom Day and Human Rights Day)
  • Organizing a national level workshop on sharing lessons learned
