Observing World Press Freedom Day: Journalism in The Face of Environmental Crisis and Self-Censorship

1st May 2024, Jessore: South Asia Center for Media in Development (SACMID) organized a discussion meeting on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day at the Jessore Shilpakala Academy Auditorium with the assistance of the daily Gramer Kagoj, highlighting the critical role of journalism in addressing environmental crises and self-censorship.

The discussion meeting was arranged as an intervention of European Union-funded project “Connecting Community & Strengthening Voices Through CSO-Media Alliance in Jessore District,” which aims to strengthen collaboration between civil society organizations and media entities.

The event was commenced at 10:30 a.m. and graced by honorable Member of Parliament for Jessore-3 Constituency, Kazi Nabil Ahmed, who attended as chief guest. Approximately 150 journalists/local correspondents from 15 districts in southwestern region gathered to participate in this insightful discussion.

The theme of the discussion meeting, framed by UNICEF for this year’s World Press Freedom Day, emphasized the importance of environmental journalism within growing global environmental challenges. Panelists engaged in constructive dialogue about significance of environmental reporting, hurdles encountered in this pursuit, and strategies to navigate them effectively.
