South Asia Center for Media in Development (SACMID) recognizes the detrimental impact of misinformation and disinformation on individuals, communities, and society as a whole. We are actively engaged in various projects and initiatives to combat this menace, tailoring our approach to different target audiences and contexts.
Here’s a glimpse into some of our efforts:
Research and Analysis:
- Situation Assessments: We conduct surveys and studies to understand the specific dynamics of misinformation spread in different regions and communities. This helps us identify key players, communication channels, and vulnerabilities.
- Content Analysis: We monitor and analyze online content to track emerging trends, identify potential sources of misinformation, and assess their impact.
- Rumor Tracking: We develop and deploy rumor tracking mechanisms to map the spread of false information and identify its root causes.
Capacity Building:
- Media Literacy Workshops: We train journalists, civil society actors, and community leaders on critical thinking skills, fact-checking techniques, and responsible media consumption.
- Fact-Checking Training: We equip individuals and organizations with the skills and tools to verify information independently and debunk false claims.
- Digital Literacy Programs: We educate citizens, particularly vulnerable groups, on safe and responsible online behavior, helping them navigate the digital landscape critically.
Advocacy and Policy Dialogue:
- Dialogue with Platforms: We engage with social media platforms to encourage them to adopt stricter policies against misinformation and disinformation.
- Policy Advocacy: We work with policymakers to advocate for legislation and regulations that promote responsible online behavior and address the spread of harmful content.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: We raise public awareness about the dangers of misinformation and disinformation, encouraging critical thinking and responsible information sharing.
Project Examples:
- Combating Mis and Disinformation Sparked by Digital and Social Media Platforms in Bangladesh: This project, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, focuses on research, capacity building, and advocacy to address the specific challenges of misinformation in Bangladesh.
- Promoting Information and Gender Literacy in Media in Bangladesh: This project incorporates misinformation awareness alongside media literacy and gender advocacy, recognizing the interconnectedness of these issues.
