Violence, Risks, and Protection for Women and Young Girls in Digital Media: Need Assessment in Sirajganj

The South Asia Center for Media in Development (SACMID), in collaboration with its local NGO partner Community Development Organisation (CDO), hosted a discussion meeting titled “Violence, Risks, and Protection of Women and Young Girls in Digital Media: Needs Assessment” on Wednesday (February 5) in Sirajganj.

This meeting was organized under the project “Empowering Media Professionals, Girl Students, and Community Women through an Improved Understanding of Digital Threats and Security Measures,” funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh.

Bringing together representatives from various social welfare organizations, professors, teachers, students, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders, the discussion focused on the risks women and young girls face in digital platforms and explored solutions to security challenges. Syed Kamrul Hasan, Deputy Director of SACMID, along with other officials, was also present at the event.

During the discussions, participants highlighted the lack of digital skills among women, the security risks they encounter. Discussion meeting provided insights into existing challenges and potential solutions, with speakers emphasizing the urgency of taking action against digital harassment. They also addressed the importance of digital literacy and security awareness, noting that many women and young girls face online risks due to a lack of technological education.

Despite security being a fundamental right, many women still fall victim to digital violence without receiving adequate support. To combat this issue, it is crucial to enhance digital skills, particularly among women in semi-urban areas. Strengthening digital security and fostering technological awareness will help empower them and reduce their vulnerability to online threats.

As part of this initiative, SACMID will implement the project in Cumilla, Khulna, and Sirajganj over the year, aiming to raise awareness about digital risks, improve security measures, and enhance the skills of women and young people, ultimately ensuring a safer digital space for all.
