Responsibility and accountability of Journalists in establishing professional Rights and Dignity
A round table discussion was organized by South Asia Center for Media in Development (SACMID), in collaboration with Daily Gramer Kagoj, to celebrate World Press Freedom Day at Jashore Press Club under the banner of the project titled “Connecting Community & Strengthening Voices Through CSO- Media Alliance in Jashore District” funded by the European Union outlining “Responsibility and accountability of Journalists in establishing professional Rights and Dignity.” This project is administered by Free Press Unlimited (FPU) and Article 19.
To observe the World Press Freedom Day, SACMID & Daily Gramer Kagoj also participated in ‘The Erased Campaign’ initiated by FPU as a joint response of solidarity. An article titled ‘The Erased 2024: Together against censorship’ was published in the Erased font in the opinion page of Daily Gramer Kagoj’s digital version of newspaper with the co-operation of SACMID. The article expresses concerns about detained journalists around the world and invites towards a joint stand against censorship. The Round Table Discussion aimed to highlight the critical role of journalists in establishing professional rights and dignity within media landscape. The event was moderated by Mobinul Islam Mobin, Editor of Daily Gramer Kagoj. Notable representatives actively participated in the discussion, including editors, publishers, news editors, joint news editors, chief reporters, photojournalists, and press club leaders from Jashore.
The event featured a thought-provoking presentation titled “Journalism in Districts: Problem, Crisis and Solution Thoughts” delivered by Milan Rahman, Editor of Daily Samajer Katha. The presentation highlighted the challenges faced by journalists in managing crisis situations and transitions within urban journalism.
Moreover, the event witnessed informative speeches from key figures from local media, including Ekram-Ud-daullah, Editor of Dainik Kalyan; Zahid Hasan Tukun, President of Jashore Press Club and Editor of Daily Jashore; SM Tauhidur Rahman, General Secretary of Press Club; Anwarul Kabir Nantu, Acting Editor of Daily Loksamaj; and Aminur Rahman Mamun, Acting Editor of Daily Samajer Katha.
A key aspect of the gathering was open discussion session which saw active participation from esteemed personalities such as Sarowar Hossain, News Editor of Daily Gramer Kagoj; Shikdar Khalid, News Editor of Loksamaj; Manotosh Basu, President of Jashore Journalists Union; Akramuzzaman, President of Journalists Union Jashore; Gopinath Das, President of Photojournalists Association; and former President Moniruzzaman Munir. Discussions emphasized the significance of upholding journalists’ dignity and responsibility to self-regulate in order to enhance professional standards.
Speakers consistently stated that journalists should protect their own dignity, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and deeply considering the concept of dignity. Some speakers emphasized that by rectifying mistakes, dignity can not only be preserved but also elevated.
The event was a part of SACMID and European Union’s ongoing efforts to promote media development in Bangladesh, encompassing initiatives such as enhancing media literacy, fostering women’s development, and providing crucial training to media professionals.
