Women in Media: Breaking Stereotypes

Since most of the professionals are male in this sector, so by being a female I have to give test always. Each and every time I have to prove my skill and excellence to find myself as equal to my male colleague. Yes, there are appreciations as well. Once, I could remember my days while I began my career, people stared at me, amazed they were how a woman could be a camera person! But now things have been improved. I always had support from my family members, they extended cooperation while I had to go out of the city and stay longer at night in my professional duties. I must remember the support of my respected teacher professor Pankaj Palit. I must say to the aspiring female video journalists – please do not retreat, but try to retain at any cost. I have seen many who was initially so enthusiastic, but later, specifically after being a mother they left the sector. I have been working as video journalist from 2011, things have change in some ways, i think we have made the path easier for new comer to have entry in this field. Only suggestion for them, don’t give up upon someone’s criticism, negative comments!  Dream was yours so you have to make it happened.

I had to listen many odd comments as I have also been appreciated by many. Someone told me with lot of surprise? “Why are you here, you should go to reporting?” Even someone do not have any understanding whether any educated person can come in to this photography or video profession. Someone, even some TV channels has got the feeling that women are slow as videographers. But however, I got ample supports and cooperation from many of my male colleagues.

I visualize such a Bangladesh as my beloved country, where there will be no rape, no disparity between men and women. I also believe that someday Bangladeshi videographers will work in global media channels like BBC and CNN.
